Shopping Tactics
Decide your maximum before you look at any tag
A number you chose in advance is the only reference price in the room that was not written by somebody trying to sell you something.

These are listed in the order worth acting on, which with setting your own reservation price is not the order they are usually presented in.
What matters most
- A figure set before browsing is immune to what the shop shows you.
- Writing it down makes later drift visible.
- The maximum should come from what the item is worth to you.
What a reservation price is
A reservation price is the most you would pay for a specific thing, decided before you have seen what anybody is charging. It comes from what the item is worth to you in use, not from what similar items happen to cost this week. Setting it in advance means every price you subsequently see is measured against your number rather than against theirs.
That reverses the usual order, in which the shop supplies the reference and you adjust away from it by degrees. It is the single cheapest defence available against every anchoring technique a seller might reasonably use.
Where the number should come from
For something that saves time or money, work out what it saves over a realistic period and let that set the ceiling. For something bought for enjoyment, the honest basis is what you are willing to give up elsewhere in the same month. For a replacement, the value of the improvement over what you already own is the relevant figure rather than the full price.
None of these require precision, and a rough number decided calmly beats a precise one decided in a shop. The number is a decision about your own priorities, which is exactly why nobody selling anything can supply it for you.
Writing it down changes behaviour
A figure held in your head drifts upward as you look, and it drifts without you noticing that it has moved. Written down before you start, the same figure becomes a fixed point that any later change has to argue against.
That argument is worth having explicitly, because sometimes new information about a category genuinely should raise the maximum you set. The point is not rigidity but visibility, so that a revision is a decision rather than an unnoticed slide. Anyone who has looked at something expensive for an hour will recognise how far a remembered number can travel.
Handling the case where nothing meets it
If nothing on the market meets your maximum, the useful conclusion is that you do not buy today rather than that you were wrong. That outcome is a successful use of the method, even though it feels like a failure at the time. It also tells you something real about the category, which is worth more than the purchase you did not make.
Revisit the number later with what you learned, and adjust it deliberately if the market has taught you something. What you should not do is adjust it in the shop, in the moment, with the item in front of you.
Where the method has limits
It works poorly for genuinely urgent purchases, where the alternative to buying is going without something you need. It works poorly for items whose value you cannot estimate because you have never owned anything comparable. In those cases the honest step is research before shopping rather than a number invented for the sake of having one.
Tracked over a quarter, it also does not help with the question of whether the item is any good, which is a separate matter entirely. A maximum protects you from paying too much; it does not protect you from buying the wrong thing.
Retailers vary discounting by region and by account, so the price on your screen may differ from any quoted here.
Using it with somebody else
For a shared household purchase, agree the maximum before either of you looks, because agreeing afterwards is much harder. A shared number also removes the dynamic where one person escalates and the other is left objecting to the total. Where you disagree, the disagreement is about what the item is worth to your household and is better had at the kitchen table.
Run the arithmetic and bringing an agreed figure into a shop turns two people into one buyer, which is a considerably stronger position. It also makes walking away possible, since neither person has to be the one who ended the outing.

The takeaway
Bring your own number into the shop, because otherwise the only reference price in the room belongs to the person selling.
Decide what you would pay before you look at what they are asking.
Questions readers ask
What if the price is far above my maximum?
Then you do not buy today. That is the method working rather than failing, and it tells you something real about the category.
Should I ever raise the number I set?
Yes, when you have genuinely learned something new. Do it deliberately and away from the shop, rather than in the moment with the item in front of you.
