Conditioning air is usually the largest single line inside a home energy bill, and the size of it is set by the building rather than by the thermostat setting.

The system replaces heat that the house loses
A furnace or air conditioner does not create a temperature. It offsets the rate at which heat leaks in or out through walls, windows, ducts and gaps.
A leakier house requires more offsetting, so an identical thermostat setting produces very different bills in two houses on the same street.
This is why efficiency work aimed at the building envelope often changes a bill more than replacing the equipment does.
Ducts lose conditioned air before it arrives
In homes with forced-air systems, ductwork running through attics, crawl spaces and garages carries conditioned air through unconditioned space.
Leaks in that run deliver expensive air to places nobody occupies, and the system compensates by running longer.
Duct sealing rarely feels like an upgrade because nothing visible changes, which is part of why it is deferred so often.
Setback works because of the leak rate
Turning a thermostat back while a house is empty saves money because the smaller temperature difference slows the leak, not because the equipment idles.
The saving grows with the size of the setback and the length of time it is held, which is why overnight and workday setbacks matter most.
Recovery does use energy, but in typical homes it does not cancel the saving. The exception is equipment sized so tightly that recovery takes hours.
Humidity is part of the cooling bill
Air conditioning removes moisture as well as heat, and in humid regions a large share of the work is dehumidification rather than temperature change.
That is why a house can read the right temperature and still feel uncomfortable, prompting a lower setting and a higher bill.
Controlling moisture sources and running equipment long enough to dehumidify often improves comfort without lowering the thermostat.
Sizing is decided once and paid for continuously
Oversized equipment cycles on and off rapidly, which reduces efficiency, shortens component life and dehumidifies poorly in cooling mode.
Systems are frequently oversized because a larger unit is a safer commercial choice for the installer than a tightly calculated one.
Since that decision is made at installation and lived with for a decade or more, it is one of the few energy choices worth slowing down for.
